JANIVA MAGNESS BAND
With the release of her 6th CD and an active touring schedule that includes over 150 performances a year, Janiva Magness has become a major player on the blues music scene.  This year, she received the W.C. Handy Award Nomination for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist.  The nomination is in addition to several other musical awards, including the B.B. King Award for Musical Excellence and the Jim Croce Award for Outstanding Achievement in Rhythm and Blues.  Her latest CD, Bury Him at the Crossroads (NorthernBlues Music), is an excursion into roots music, from vintage Motor City R&B, to the romantic soul of Sam Cooke and the plaintive sounds of folk blues.  Magness crosses these musical boundaries with her unabashed style and dynamic vocal range.

Raised in Detroit, Janiva was influenced by the R&B sounds of Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Etta James, and Martha Reeves.  Living Blues describes her as "an up-and-coming blues shouter," while Blues Access calls her “a no nonsense blues powerhouse.”  She moved to Arizona early in her career, performing with the Blues Connection and Janiva Magness and the Mojomatics.  In the late 1980s, she moved to Los Angeles where she performs and records with a variety of blues musicians, such as Kid Ramos, Junior Watson, and Jeff Turmes.  Janiva’s “Red Hot Rhythm & Blues Explosion” has performed at music festivals and clubs throughout Europe, Canada, and the U.S.  She has developed a loyal and enthusiastic following for her brand of jump blues & soul.  As Blues Revue says, “Watch out!  They’ve turned up the heat!  The band jumps from the word go.  Magness connects with genuine passion.”  Visit her website (http://www.janivamagness.com/) for more information.

GUY BUDD AND THE BLUES GYPSIES
Guy Budd and the Blues Gypsies feature Guy Budd on guitar & vocals, Andy Kulikowski on bass & vocals, Howard Emmons on drums, Ken Burton on keyboard & vocals, and Roger Gatchet on flamenco harmonica.  Guy Budd has been performing on the Central Coast since 1978, and is well known for his full-bodied voice and expressive guitar work.  Kulikowski, Emmons, and Burton anchor Budd's Hendrix influenced guitar work.  Guy has hinted that special guest vocalists will also be appearing.  The band's performances primarily feature originals that encompass a wide range of blues/rock styles, from screaming guitar jams to soulful ballads, supplemented with traditional up tempo blues covers.  Expect a high energy performance in commemoration of the birthdays of Bill Thrasher and Ken Burton.

VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets.  We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) or e-mail the volunteer coordinator at SLOBluesSociety@yahoo.com and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
