DEBBIE
DAVIES BAND
Born into a musical
family (her father worked for Ray Charles), Debbie Davies started her career
playing in blues and rock bands in the San Francisco Bay area. She
moved to LA in 1984 to be the lead guitarist for Maggie Mayall and the
Cadillacs - an all female R&B band led by the wife of John Mayall.
In 1988, she joined Albert Collins and the Icebreakers and for the next
four years performed nightly with a blues guitar player famed for his creativity.
According to Debbie, “What I learned from Albert is that everything that
comes out has to be totally wired to your soul - no matter what.”
After working with Collins, she formed her own band, which currently includes
drummer Don Costagno, bass guitarist Alan Hager, and organist Roy Rodriques.
Debbie has been nominated for seven W. C. Handy awards and was selected as best contemporary female blues artist in 1997. She is also one of the only female guitar players with a Fender endorsement. In 1993, she came out with her solo debut release, Picture This, which featured a cameo appearance by Albert Collins on “I Wonder Why.” Since then, Debbie has released nine CDs with her band and in collaboration with guitarists such as Tab Benoit, Coco Montoya, and Anson Funderburgh. On the CDs, she continues to develop the cutting guitar style she learned from Albert (“Ice Pick”) Collins. Her 2003 release, Key to Love, was a tribute featuring songs recorded, written, or inspired by John Mayall.
Davies most recent
(August 2005) release on Telarc Records, All I Found, contains all original
songs by Debbie and song writing partner Don Costagno. Packed with
fluid solos alternating with relentlessly rhythmic guitar, this CD explores
the guilty pleasures of excessive food and explosive relationships.
Highlights include the guitar/keyboard duet on “All I found,” the swing
sound of “I won’t be your baby too long,” and the extended note bending
demonstration on “So What.” As Blues Revue describes it, “She pulls
out all of the stops. She can play it all: seductive, soulful material,
down-home Delta blues or humorous tales of life on the road.”
GARY MENDOZA
BAND
The Gary Mendoza Band is a hard driving
band filled with experienced Central Coast musicians. The band rocks
the house with a blend of traditional electric Chicago and Delta style
blues. Gary Mendoza (lead vocals & harmonica) is a bluesman at
heart, who was raised on the traditional sounds of Muddy Waters, Howlin’
Wolf, and Little Walter. Since 1995, he has fronted several blues
bands including Code Blues, The Blues Effects, and The Salt Water Blues
Band. Bruce Krupnik (guitar, slide guitar, & vocals) left the
Los Angeles music scene and has been playing on the Central Coast for the
past ten years. He was the former lead guitarist for Slidewinder
and The Hoodoo Blues Band. Ron Hagadone (bass & guitar) was a
veteran of Hollywood blues bands before moving to the Central Coast.
Bob Hobbs (drums) has played throughout the U.S. with musicians such as
Tom Waits and Ron Thompson. Kevin McCracken (harmonica) has performed
with several of the central coast’s hottest blues ensembles.

Your Blues Society is run entirely by
volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the
shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could
use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to
work a shift at the show.
