BLUES REVIEW
The San Luis Obispo Blues Society celebrates its 25th birthday on Saturday, September 24 with Café R&B and the Mighty Croon Dogs. Join us for free cake and champagne (while supplies last); party favors and other surprises; and a night of DANCE!  The show starts at 8 pm at the SLO Vets Hall, 801 Grand Avenue.  Tickets are $15/$17; all tickets are sold at the door. 21 and over, please.  Buy a membership for $10 at the door and get $2 off admission for a year of shows.  For more information, call 805/541-7930.

CAFÉ R&B
It’s not easy to describe the power of a Café R&B performance. It’s not only that Roach has a haunting voice with an astonishing vocal and emotional range, and is hot enough to melt the polar icecap. Or that Byl Carruthers, the lead guitarist, alternates seamlessly between soulful and sizzling. Or the way the rhythm section verges on out of control. Or the soaring keyboard interludes. Some reviewers express the experience by resorting to hyperbole; Hits Magazine provides this description, “Imagine Etta James riding a Harley out of an active volcano and you’ll have some vague inkling of the vocal power emanating from Café R&B’s Roach …” Others employ some variant of “Stunned is not a strong enough word to describe what they did to the audience.” (Music Connection). The mix of original compositions and classic material like Born Under a Bad Sign and Killing Floor is truly an educational experience. We wouldn’t compare this band to any other; a Café R&B show is a unique and unforgettable experience.

Based in Los Angeles, for the past ten years Café R&B has honed their ensemble performance at blues clubs throughout the US and Europe, and they’ll be coming to us fresh from the San Francisco Blues Festival. Besides lead singer Roach, the band includes Byl Carruthers on guitar, John Thomas on keyboards, Bobby Pickett on bass, and Stephen Klong on drums.

This is your chance to get an autographed copy of the new CD very live (It Works Music; www.caferandb.com). Buy an extra one for your car; there is no situation so dire that it cannot be eased by the Café R&B version of “Born under a bad sign.”  It turns out that Harvelles is a really good place to record live; the liner notes describe the CD as “Our love letter to the blues and all the men and women who spent their lives laying the foundations for what came after.” Fittingly, it features several classic tunes by Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Memphis Minnie and others.  Roach’s version of the Muddy Waters song “Walkin’ thru the park” is so absolutely personal you’ll find yourself worrying about how she and Byl are getting along.  The interplay between the rhythm section and the rest of the band just keeps getting better; there’s lots more keyboard this time around; and the CD features dazzling outbursts of Byl’s howling precision guitar, particularly on “I just want to make love to you.”

THE MIGHTY CROON DOGS
We want the dance floor to fill up early, so the Mighty Croon Dogs will be opening the show. Drawing from the Blues, Soul, R&B and New Orleans Funk , the Dogs will make sure you git on out and shake your tail! Known all over the Central Coast for their sweet harmonies and tight musicianship, the Mighty Croon Dogs include “Guitar Wizard” Billy Foppiano (guitar and vocals), Laura Lee (vocals and percussion), Scott Wright (saxophone and vocals), Geert de Lange (bass and vocals), and Denny Carvalho (drums and vocals). Check out their website at www.funlivemusic.com.

MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND DANCE
Current members of the San Luis Obispo Blues Society are encouraged to attend the annual membership meeting.  In an effort to increase attendance, we have booked a blues band THE FREAKIN’ DEACONS.  The meeting will be held at the ODD FELLOWS HALL (520 Dana, SLO) on FRIDAY, October 7 from 7:15 - 10:30 pm.  We are planning a short meeting, followed by a dance.  Beer and wine will be available for purchase.  This event is FREE, but it is a MEMBERS ONLY event, so be sure to renew or buy a membership at the September 24 show and bring along your MEMBERSHIP CARD.  In order to give our volunteers the night off, we will not be selling memberships at the door.  Whew, major format change.  Why don’t I repeat the confusing parts.  FREE MEMBERS ONLY DANCE FRIDAY October 7 at 7:15 pm at the SLO ODD FELLOWS HALL with the FREAKIN DEACONS.

VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets.  We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to work a shift at the show.
