This was a truly "convertible" airplane. The lighter yellow areas are covers over areas which can be "adjusted", altering the sweep back, dihedral, and wing droop. Flown in a variety of configurations, "wingtip droop" and increased dihedral were found to be of no advantage. Maximum sweepback allowed the center of gravity to be moved forward and provided the best longitudinal stability.

Success of the N-1M (Northrop #1 Mockup) convinced General "Hap" Arnold to support further study of the flying wing concept and the N-9M and B-35 programs.
