BLUES SHOW REVIEW. The San Luis Obispo Blues Society celebrates the holiday season with the soul infused, horn accented blues of the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band on Saturday, December 2.  The Guy Budd Band opens the show.  The show begins at 8:00 pm at the SLO Vets Hall, 801 Grand Avenue in San Luis Obispo.  Tickets are $15 for Blues Society members and $17 for the general public. 21 and over, please.  For more information, call 805/541-7930.

THE JACKIE PAYNE STEVE EDMONSON BAND
Jackie Payne and Steve Edmonson first played together 10 years ago as members of the Dynatones.  While touring, they developed a close friendship that is evident when you hear them perform. Jackie is a soul singer who has been compared to James Brown and Wilson Picket, while Steve's guitar playing is often compared to B. B. King and Ronnie Earl.  Together with Carl Green (tenor & alto sax), Mike Rose (trumpet), "Col." Bill Singletary (bass), and Nick Otis (drums), this outfit delivers a classic blues performance with a strong dose of soul.

Jackie Payne began his singing career at age 13 in an Atlanta swing band. By age 18, he was in Texas singing with blues legends such as T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, and Freddy King. He recorded his first single, “Go-Go Train” in 1965.  In the 80s and 90s, he toured and recorded with the Johnny Otis Orchestra, and was the featured singer on Otis’ grammy nominated CD, Spirit of the Black Territory Bands (Arhoolie, 1994).  In 1998, he recorded A Day in the Life of a Bluesman, followed in 2000 by Ain't Nothin' But A Party!  He has also recorded with Kirk “Eli” Fletcher and Kenny “Blue” Ray.

Steve Edmonson is the son of a folk musician who was raised listening to the folk blues of Brownie McGhee and Lightnin’ Hopkins.  He has played guitar with a wide range of musicians, including James Cotton, Luther Tucker, Van Morrison, Maria Muldaur, and Buddy Miles.  Steve spent four years touring with the blues/soul show band, the Dynatones, before teaming up with Kenny “Blue” Ray and Jackie Payne to record Soulful Blues in 2001, a collaboration which led to the formation of the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band.

The newest release from the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band, Masters of the Game (2006, Delta Groove), is a dynamic paring of Jackie's soulful Southern vocals with Steve's Chicago style blues guitar.  “Payne, Edmonson, and their compatriots have delivered an eclectic set of blues, soul, and vintage R&B with a fusion of elegance, musical dexterity, and hot blooded passion that's become all too rare” (Living Blues). GUY BUDD BAND
The band features Guy Budd on guitar & vocals, Howard Emmons on drums, Wil Anderson on bass, and Ken Burton on keyboard.  Guy Budd has been performing on the Central Coast since 1978, and is well known for his full-bodied voice and wildly proficient guitar work. Emmons, Anderson, and Burton anchor Budd's Hendrix influenced guitar.
