LITTLE
CHARLIE & THE NIGHTCATS.
Sacramento-based Little Charlie & the Nightcats play blues, swing,
and jump blues. Over 30 years ago, guitarist Charlie Baty and harmonicist,
vocalist, and songwriter Rick Estrin teamed up to create the Nightcats.
Since then, their mastery of the blues has been demonstrated through Baty’s
awe-inspiring guitar work and Estrin’s playful original songs, cutting
edge vocals, and dynamic harmonica playing. Their most recent CD,
Nine Lives (Alligator Records, 2005) led to a Blues Foundation nomination
for Best Band of the Year in 2006.
Charlie Baty is a master of a variety of guitar styles, from blues to jazz to surf music, which he blends to create his own unique style. According to Guitar World, “Baty’s straight blues playing is eye-popping…he stretches solos to the breaking point, skittering on the edge, where one wrong note will bring the whole thing crashing down.” Rick Estrin is an accomplished songwriter who won a W. C. Handy Award in 1993 for his songwriting. Not only does he write for the Nightcats, but his songs have also appeared on three Grammy nominated recordings. His harmonica playing is in the spirit of Little Walter. As the San Francisco Chronicle describes him, “Rick Estrin is an amazing harmonica player, a soulful lead vocalist, and a brilliant songwriter.” Rounding out the band are drummer J. Hansen and bassist Lorenzo Farrell, both veterans of the Bay area’s Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums.
Little
Charlie & the Nightcats released their first album, All the Way Crazy,
in 1987 on Alligator Records. Twenty years and nine albums later,
the Nightcats continue to wow audiences around the world with their performances.
The Chicago Sun-Times declares, “It’s tough for fans to stay in their seats
when Estrin and Baty and their musical cohorts get cooking.” And
the good news is, of course we want folks to dance. Visit their website
for a preview (http://www.littlecharlie.net).
UNFINISHED
BUSINESS.
Unfinished Business is a Central Coast band specializing in the hits of
the 1960’s and this “special soul show” by the band will feature some of
the great music by soul artists of the 1960’s, such as Otis Redding, The
Temptations, James Brown, The Isley Brothers, and Wilson Pickett.
The band is fronted by Ben “Soul Man” Davis on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
He is joined by Ed Miller on lead guitar, Jim Witt on bass, Dave Hollister
on drums, and Greg Smith, who tours and records with The Eagles, on baritone
and tenor sax. For more information about the band, visit their website
(http://www.unfinished-business.org).
VOLUNTEER.Your
Blues Society is run entirely by volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment,
volunteers get into the shows for free and receive a couple free drink
tickets. We could use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail
