CHRIS
BEARD
Chris Beard grew up surrounded by blues
players and blues music. The son of blues guitarist Joe Beard, Chris
picked up the guitar at age five and picked out “Green Onions” – a mixture
of blues and funk that characterizes his style today. By age 15,
he was working steadily in an R&B band. After years of working
as a sideman and with his father, Chris started his own band in the 1990s.
With influences such as Luther Allison, Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Johnny
“Guitar” Watson, Beard has gained a reputation as a talented guitar player
and songwriter with an exceptional ability to express blues traditions
with contemporary instrumentation.
In 1998, Beard released his first CD, Barwalkin’,
which earned him a 1998 nomination for the W.C. Handy Award, “Best New
Blues Artist”. In 1999 he won the Blues Beat Magazine Muddy Waters
Award for “New Talent of the Year”. His 2001 release, Born to Play
the Blues, showcases his powerful vocals and strong, clear guitar lines.
The result is a sound that is emotionally charged and impeccably played.
Beard’s third CD, Live Wire (2005), further demonstrates his extraordinary
talent as a musician. Chris’ stage presence and showmanship come
through on this live recording. As Bernard Allison says, “One of
the front runners of the next generation of players. If you like
the mix of blues/rock/funk in your face guitar, I highly recommend this
CD to everyone.” For more information, see http://www.chrisbeard.org/.
GARY MENDOZA
BAND
The Gary Mendoza Band is a powerhouse
blues band that plays selections ranging from Chicago-style blues to contemporary
high-energy boogie blues. Mendoza, one of the best blues vocalists
on the Central Coast, is always in demand because of his ability to deliver
a crowd-pleasing performance. Supported by a group of talented musicians,
including Bruce Krupnik on lead guitar, Kevin McCracken on harmonica, Andy
Kulikowski on bass, and Andy Kulikowski II on drums, this band is guaranteed
to shake the house. The band’s recently released CD Keep 'em Dancin'
- Live at Mission Plaza is available online at www.cdbaby.com/cd/gmendoza.
VOLUNTEER
Your Blues Society is run entirely by
volunteers. Besides a sense of accomplishment, volunteers get into the
shows for free and receive a couple free drink tickets. We could
use your help, so call 541-7930 (our voice mail number) and volunteer to
work a shift at the show.
