BLUES
ROUNDUP 2001
The SLO Blues Society will host its annual Blues Roundup at the Paso Robles Hot Springs and Spa on Saturday, July 14 from 5PM to 11 PM. This year's line-up features both Central Coast blues performers and out of town guests. The show will begin with two acoustic blues acts: Catalina Eddy & All Night Stan and the Texicali Divas. As evening comes rolling in, we will shift to electric blues with Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums, Lady Bianca, and Brickyard Jones. Tickets are $13 for Blues Society members and $15 for non-members. Children under 12 are free with an adult. We are using a new entrance, located at 3725 Buena Vista Drive.
The Roundup is a unique blues experience. It is a mixture of a typical outdoor concert (festival seating, drinks, and barbecue) and an outdoor dance experience under the stars. We present a wide range of blues music, from acoustic to electric. The show will start with traditional Delta blues, transition to the swing era of the '30s to '50s, and finish with contemporary blues. This year we are featuring several outstanding female blues performers. The Texicali Divas (Karen Tyler and Valerie Johnson) sing and play acoustic blues, followed by the interplay of Steve Lucky and Carmen Getit performing jump blues, and concluding with the soulful, rhythm & blues of singer and pianist Lady Bianca.
Catalina Eddy & All
Night Stan (5:00 PM)
Catalina Eddy (Ted Waterhouse) & All Night Stan (Stan Sine) have
been playing the blues on the Central Coast for the twenty years.
Ted Waterhouse uses a bottleneck with his National Resophonic guitar, while
Stan backs him up on harmonica. Ted is a former member of the Howlie
Playboys, and Stan played with the Slow Motion Blues Band. Their
music selection ranges from Robert Johnson (the Delta) to Muddy Waters
(Chicago), along with few of their own compositions.
Texicali Divas
(6:00 PM)
Karen Tyler
and Valerie Johnson are the Texicali Divas. The Divas were formed
at last year's Live Oak Festival and have spent the year developing their
unique blend of music at local venues. They are currently touring
the U.S. (including a show at the King Biscuit Blues Festival) playing
traditional and original blues, swing, and gospel. For the Roundup,
the band includes Al B. Blue Ingram on guitar and Fred Murray on bass and
lap steel.
Karen Tyler, a Texas transplant, is known for her beautiful voice, solid acoustic guitar playing, award winning songwriting, and the vivid stories she tells as introductions to her songs. Her latest CD, Alone & Blue, is #1 on the WorldMusicCharts.com blues chart and she was voted one of the top 6 blues artists in the national Delta Snake Blues News reader's poll.
Valerie Johnson is a blues vocalist who can “belt the blues” with the power and conviction of Koko Taylor, Etta James and Janis Joplin (which is why she was selected to tour with Big Brother and the Holding Company.) Valerie sings with the Creole Syncopaters (New Orleans jazz), the Golden Eagle Jazz Band (traditional jazz), the Texicali Divas, and her own band, the Blues Doctors (roots blues and R&B). Valerie oversees the Blues for Kids project at schools throughout the Central Coast.
Steve Lucky & the
Rhumba Bums with Carmen Getit (7:15 PM)
Steve Lucky and
the Rhumba Bums are an energetic jump-blues band from San Francisco featuring
Steve Lucky's pounding piano and vocals and the vivacious Miss Carmen Getit
on vocals and guitar. It's the one-two punch of solid musicianship
and charming on-stage banter that has attracted audiences throughout the
country.
Steve Lucky started playing piano at age 8 and was playing professionally by 13. After playing jump blues during college in the midwest, he moved to New York to play with guitarist Johnny Copeland, Blues Traveler, and other bands. He moved to San Francisco in 1993 and formed the Rhumba Bums, but the band really took shape in '94 with the addition of Miss Carmen Getit. The Rhumba Bums have released one full length CD (Come Out Swingin'!) and the band has contributed to 12 additional swing CDs. Steve Lucky has also recorded with John Hammond, Rusty Zinn, Mark Hummel, Sista Monica, and Red Archibald.
Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums' debut CD Come Out Swingin'! (Rumpus Records) shows their ability to rock, jump, and swing with the blues. This four star recording (Downbeat) showcases boogie, blues, R&B, and jazz of the '40s and '50s. Lucky and Carmen's singing and playing is backed by a trio of sax players (Peter Cornell, Rob Sudduth, and Jules Broussard) and a swinging rhythm section. “Both Lucky's and Getit's lead vocals nail their decidedly “little big band” sound just perfectly and when they share vocals on a tune or two, their delightful interplay will have you thinking you're eavesdropping on an intimate but juicy lover's spat,” (Blues Access).
Lady Bianca
(8:30 PM)
Lady Bianca's
music embodies the intersection of gospel and rhythm & blues.
Born in Kansas City, she moved to the Bay area as a child. She learned
to sing gospel at church, but blues was not allowed in the house while
she was growing up. However, her father played a bluesy Texas style
of gospel on bottleneck guitar and taught her how to put gospel lyrics
into rhythm & blues tunes. She studied the piano and earned a
scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to study classical
music, piano, and opera. She combined this background to create her
own soulful approach to the blues.
During the '70s and '80s, she performed with a variety of groups including Sly and the Family Stone, Frank Zappa, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, and Van Morrison. She recorded several CDs with Van Morrison (Beautiful Vision and Inarticulate Speech of the Heart). In the 80's she met Stanley Lippitt songwriter, producer, and walking blues encyclopedia. Together, they formed the team that created the “Mighty Oakland Sound” of blues, which led to Lady Bianca being named female vocalist of the year by the City of Oakland. The band includes Lady Bianca on piano and vocals, Jeff Barager on guitar, Oshmin Oden on bass, and Kevin Williams on drums.
Her first solo CD, Best Kept Secret (Telarc), was recorded in 1995. This June, she released her second CD, Rollin' (Rooster Blues). Lady Bianca describes Rollin' as rhythmic and funky, with songs about jealousy (“Keep My Baby Out Of Your Eye”), regret (“Drop of Water”), and the evolution of the blues ("Dandy Blues"). She characterizes her style as, “R&B blues with gospel overtones and very sexy,” and says, “I make music because of its effect on the spirit and body. I don't perform for the audience, I perform for myself, I share my feelings with the audience.”
Brickyard Jones
(10:00 PM)
“Blues Energy” these words describe the band Brickyard Jones.
The band is known for their passion for swinging West Coast jump and Chicago
blues. Tom Harkenrider (guitar) and Ben Hernandez (vocals and harmonica),
the founding members, have invested time and energy in keeping their music
authentic, while adding their own signature with original songs.
All of the members of Brickyard Jones are seasoned professionals who have
worked with some of the nation's best blues and jazz bands. Drummer
Marty Dodson has toured with Junior Watson and Mark Hummel, guitarist Tom
Harkenrider plays with James Harman, bass player Brian Triplett tours nationally
with jazz bands, and vocalist / harmonica player Ben Hernandez is a student
of Mark Hummel.
