The SLO Blues Society presents some outstanding local blues talent on Saturday, May 19.  The Central Coast is fortunate to have several good blues bands.  We try to feature a local band at each of our shows.  However, in the Spring, we showcase a selection of local bands at our May show.  This year, our "locals only" show features Black Cat Bone, the HooDoo Blues Band, and Big Daddy’s Blues Band.  The show starts at 8:00 PM at the SLO Vets Hall.  Tickets are $10 for members and $12 for non-members. You can buy a membership for $10 at the door and get $2 off for this show.

BLACK CAT BONE

Black Cat Bone is a trio that performs traditional Texas/Chicago style blues. The band consists of guitarist/lead singer Joe Wilkins, upright and electric playing bassist Jon Loomis, and percussionist Karen Garman.  Black Cat Bone is a trio that creates high energy blues that attracts dancers and audiences of all ages.

Singer/guitarist Joe Wilkins has been playing the blues for the past decade with various bands from Nebraska to California. Influences from the likes of Albert King, Freddy King, and Johnny Winter are evident in his guitar work and combine with his strong vocals for a powerful performance. Bassist Jon Loomis created his unique bass style while touring Europe and refined it on the road with Lee Rocker. Rhythm mistress Karen Garman maintains the catchy blues beat for Black Cat Bone. Her creative percussions compliment the trio perfectly. Jon's solid, groovy bass lines lock in with Karen's exploding drum beats to form a tight back drop for Wilkins' vocal and guitar phrases.

Black Cat Bone aims to get people to jump up out of their seats and get onto the dance floor. Black Cat Bone is currently working on their first full length CD "Born Blind."

HOODOO BLUES BAND

The Hoodoo Blues Band invites you to “get your feet to moving”. This rocking blues band will keep your toes tapping all night long. The HooDoo Blues Band plays a powerful blend of Chicago, Texas, and West Coast blues.  These talented local musicians are geared up and ready to play their hot, sweaty mix of tunes that includes originals, classics, and some not so well known smoky blues.  Band members include Bruce Krupnik on guitar, Dustin Rhoads on drums, Jahn Van Eps on bass, Mark White on keyboards, and Lisa Plevel on vocals.

The HooDoo Blues Band calls on musical influences such as Albert Collins, Etta James, Lucky Peterson, Debbie Davies, and Lou Ann Barton…just to name a few. The HooDoo Blues Band is NOT a sit down and listen kind of band.  Be prepared to “get on up and get your feet to moving."

BIG DADDY’S BLUES BAND

The music of Big Daddy's Blues Band pulls all ages of blues lovers out to boogie. Young and old alike come out to party with this dynamic and danceable band. The band has paid their dues working the clubs and concert circuit along the California coast. Fans have found that Big Daddy's Blues Band's smoking versions of old favorites and the band's house rocking originals keep 'em coming back for more. This mix of old and fine new music alike has developed a loyal following in San Luis Obispo and everywhere they perform.

Stan (the Rock) Manning lays down a sharp, blistering bass foundation for the band with Greg Barnes pumping as the rhythm machine. These two with their passionate style drive the band like an emotional train.  Kevin McCracken's powerful and weaving leads on harmonica offer up the perfect compliment to Dan Colvin's searing sax and soulful vocals. Jesse Savage's down and dirty, swinging, stinging guitar licks bring a classic blues feel to the music of Big Daddy's.  Joe Pilloud (Doctor Feel Good ) seasons it up with his free spirited interpretations of both standards and original compositions, with smooth and direct vocal skills, while offering up moments of pure brilliance on the B3 organ and piano.

Their separate styles blend together as they feed off each other in sweet harmony.  Big Daddy's Blues Band doesn't just play music, they embody it, offering something for everyone.
